About the Dolphins
Founded on the principles of fair play and sporting excellence, the Dolphins Golfing Society has become a cornerstone of Doha's amateur golf community. Every Tuesday night, members gather at the Academy Course to test their skills across various competition formats, accumulating points throughout the season in pursuit of prestigious year-end honours.
Our society welcomes golfers of all abilities—from those taking their first competitive swings to seasoned players with single-digit handicaps. What unites us is a shared love for the game and a commitment to friendly competition. Beyond the scores and leaderboards, we're building lasting friendships and creating memorable moments on the fairways of Doha.
The season culminates in our celebrated Year-End Gathering & Prize Giving, where outstanding achievements are recognised, stories are shared, and the Society Champion is crowned. The Dolphins Year Book 2025
Competition Formats
The Dolphins offer four distinct competition formats throughout the season, each designed to challenge different aspects of your game. From individual stroke play to team scrambles, there's variety every week to keep things fresh and exciting.
Monthly Medal
Traditional stroke play where every shot counts. Play the course as it lies, record your gross score, and let your handicap do the work. The lowest net score claims the medal—a true test of consistency and mental fortitude over 9 holes.
Scoring: Gross score minus handicap equals net score
Stableford
Points-based scoring that rewards aggressive play whilst protecting against disaster holes. Earn points based on your net score relative to par—the higher your total, the better your round. It's golf's most forgiving format, perfect for maintaining momentum.
Scoring: Points per hole (e.g., 2 for par, 3 for birdie)
Scramble Pairs
Team up with a partner for our most social format. Both players hit from each spot, then choose the best shot and both play from there. Strategy, communication, and the occasional miracle shot combine for an entertaining evening.
Scoring: Team's best ball on every shot
Matchplay
Head-to-head competition where you battle opponents across the season in a bracket or league format. Win individual holes to claim the match—it's golf at its most thrilling, where momentum can shift on a single putt.
Scoring: Holes won determines the match winner
The Season Points Race
Every Tuesday night competition contributes to the season-long points race, creating an exciting narrative that builds from the first tee shot in autumn to the final putt in spring. This cumulative system rewards consistency, regular attendance, and competitive excellence across all formats.
How Points Work
Each competition awards points based on finishing position, with bonus points for exceptional performances and participation rewards for every player who completes their round. The system is designed to keep the race competitive throughout the season—one brilliant round can vault you up the leaderboard, whilst consistent top-ten finishes build an impressive total.
Points are tallied after every Tuesday event, with the updated leaderboard shared with all members. The beauty of our system is that it values both peak performance and dedication—you don't need to win every week to become Society Champion.
